"The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit surveyed 252 youth sports leagues across the Bay Area to determine whether teams are following California concussion laws. More than 80 percent of leagues, 207, wouldn’t share details on their safety protocols." https://t.co/fr1OqxQiUc

"I know that no helmet can ever prevent CTE.
I know that many athletes... die decades earlier than non-athletes, that many
of their final years
are spent living in a murky, painful
swamp of splitting headaches
and unending pain.

And yet, every Saturday,
I’m in the press box
or in the stands.
On Sunday,
I’m on my couch
...tuned in….
 and I’m painfully aware
of what I’m condoning and encouraging
every week
when I turn on the TV.

And yet, I can’t stop.”

“The medical evidence that
football causes significant damage
to our teenagers
 is overwhelming.

The ongoing scientific debate
as to the nature and extent
of that damage
should not be used to justify continuing
to allow
this damage
to happen.”

“Is that which is being done
anywhere close
to the dimensions of the problem?
That’s the real question.
And the answer is ‘no.’
The problem is science takes time,
and the games
are being played
tomorrow.
You need to make decisions now.”

Above the Law

In college football, a coach (boss) can batter a player (employee).

In any other profession, this would not be allowed and would be grounds for termination.

But then again, college football is not the bastion of ethical or moral high ground. https://t.co/QwaYABLE66

The behavior we see routinely exhibited by NCAA football coaches would not be tolerated in any other occupation or any other context. And it should not be there either. https://t.co/ezIoXjZBDm

Maryland's investigators learned that during meals and in the training room, players were shown graphic videos, violent imagery that included animals killing each other. “...animals eating other animals, pulling them apart," said one playerhttps://t.co/pCxzdS6DuI

Extra running or "conditioning" (up-downs or bear crawls to the point of vomiting are favorites) is classic football punishment.
Make no mistake: It is physical torture that would be unconstitutional for any grownup court to mete out.

Heartless and unacceptable:

Whether we are in
an elevator,

a classroom, or a boardroom,
we must demand
those in power

confront the consequences
of their actions.

Nothing is more important to child athletes than Congress stepping up to take regulation out of the hands of the industry by creating an independent agency for oversight. Look at the sex abuse scandals, brain trauma epidemic & hazing in youth sports, it’s out of control.
