THE END OF THE DEBATE

The embargo has lifted on @bachyns and my CTE paper in Neurology, and it's a big one.

Headline: prevalence of CTE in NFL retirees is AT LEAST 10% - and plausibly much higher (20-50%).

Nobody's estimated this before in academic lit. Scary stuff.https://t.co/54RG34dZuY ($) pic.twitter.com/X0XQxtKDCt

If these findings extended to nearly any other occupation there would be an outcry for change. This is completely unacceptable. https://t.co/CWOY77jjtz

— Joseph Schwartz (@schwartz_j) November 29, 2018

There is a body of literature on brain injury & acute & chronic disease a century old pointing to this moment. There’re banks of diseased brains & folks with persistent symptoms that never clear. And, now, decent numbers for one occupation. What more could anyone possibly need?

SCHOOLS must lead.

Teachers must demand CHANGE.

Does football meet the legal criteria for an "Ultra-Hazardous Activity"?https://t.co/l6DezltmyA

— Kent Johnson (@37919KJ) November 3, 2018
"
Ultra-Hazardous Activity

“An activity or process
that presents
an unavoidable risk
of serious harm…."

"In determining whether an activity is abnormally dangerous, the following factors are to be considered: (a) existence of a high degree of risk of some harm to the person…; (b) likelihood that the harm that results from it will be great; (c) inability to eliminate the risk by the exercise of reasonable care; (d) extent to which the activity is not a matter of common usage; (e) inappropriateness of the activity to the place where it is carried on; and (f) extent to which its value to the community is outweighed by its dangerous attributes.”

"Just because
this might be
entrenched,

normalized, or typical
at our campus
or elsehwhere

does not make it
remotely acceptable,
particularly
when it's perpetuated

by paid
public servants."

Nearly a third of children with #concussion experience symptoms for a year, NICHD-funded study finds.

Huge gulf btw this & studies on RTP from sports concussion saying 90% "recover" in a month. Why? For starters, 1-year follow up is rare. More thoughts?https://t.co/8lXPHJkptx

Brain Cells &
Skin Cells

"Your skin cells keep dividing,
they die & give birth
to new cells all the time....
After an injury,

the skin makes
a bunch of new cells
& uses them to heal
your wound.

Yet, nerve cells in your brain,
also called neurons,
do not renew themselves....
This is especially worrisome
because
neurons
are very sensitive cells & they die
for all sorts of reasons.
"

Much Respect to these students @UofMaryland Who would send their son to play football for this program after this ? They acted like it was just an accident and they did nothing wrong. #JordanMcNair’s family deserves better than thishttps://t.co/faG3hNGbrD

They're kids.
I don't care how big
or fast or strong they are
-- they're still
just kids;
human beings
suffering & dying
in our schools.

Yes, people need
to be held
accountable.
But we must also recognize,
this is
a systemic problem.
Policies and laws
need to change.

In the 1950s and 1960s Harry Kaplan and Jefferson Browder described the existence of CTE as an illusion, denied that repeated punches had anything to do with it, and they advocated for the boxing industry and sometimes represented it. pic.twitter.com/eh6cIEbYqf
